Montana Cyclocross State Championship - 14th running of Herron CX

Saturday November 9th.

Please note the change in starts times:

12pm - Early Race - Cat 4, Cat 5, Juniors, Women, Master B
1pm - Late Race - Cat 1, 2, 3, Master A

Confirmation of categories for which times coming shortly.  Myke Hersmeyer took some great shots of last year's race.  His Facebook page,

A Classic like none other, Connelly at Herron Park.  One of the most underrated crossers of all time.

Pug life will be out for sure.

This run up is always nasty, expect it for state champs.

Recovering from injury Pug Life wants a strong 2nd half of the cross season.  He's a favorite for medallions.

Herron CX sets up nicely for AA.  He had a strong ride last year.

Bring the family, it's a fun community event and this year it will be the state championship.

Missoula Wednesday Night #4 - Fort Missoula

The race tonight will be at Fort Missoula.

Doll wins his first of the year - Wednesday #3

The return to the Fort brought a really fun Hartman set course.  Twisty and two off the bike sections.  The course was compact but with dry conditions it made the most of bike handling skills.

Jesse Doll and Toby Meierbachtol battled to the end.  Doll had the legs in the end, but the battle between two of the best Missoula riders is heating up.  Both riders seem relatively even and that makes for great racing.

The Montana series heads to Helena this weekend.  Remember that Rolling Thunder call up is based on Montana overall series standings.  Get your front row call up!

Missoula Cyclocross #3 Update - Fort Missoula

Message from promoter

The weather looks like it will cooperate with us for the Wednesday night racing this week in such a way that will allow us to race at Fort Missoula. Racing at the fort will begin at 5:45 and registration opens at 4:30pm Please park on the north end of fort Missoula and try to avoid parking along the split rail fence at Fort Missoula. There is plenty of parking north of the museum at Fort Missoula. The open field north of the museum is all city park and is open for parking. Please take advantage of that area.

Landen Rolls Missoula Wednesday #2

The current series leader Ingrid Lovitt took her 2nd win in a row, this time over Kristine Akland.  Who was making her 2013 debut.

Landen Beckner needed 25 minutes or so until the legs started clicking.  Riding in a four man group the BMC rider attacked on a slippery course (for MT standards).  There was no response from the Jesse Doll or Toby Meirerbachtol.  Beckner soloed in for the victory.  The series leader, Toby was 2nd and Doll debuted his season with a fine 3rd.  Meierbachtol retains the jersey.

Travis Howard continues his nice riding in Masters A to take his 2nd win in a row.

If anyone has photos, share them on Missoula Cyclocross's FB page or email a couple to me,

Pumped to see James race last night!

Missoula Team Mapei - Hellgate Takes Wins and Sweeps Podium

Dave Museeuw took the hole shot and didn't look back for the first half of the race.  He was joined up front by Toby Tafi and Jeff Ballerini.  There was a nice gap.  Behind some began to charge, (Foster, Carnes, Fields, Lenaburg) but Hellgate was too much.  Toby rode away, Stink passed Hartman, but in the end Kevin could have called in mid race and dictated the winner.

On the ladies side Ingrid looked great and took the win.  Great turnout in the ladies field and Men's B.  I'll get some more information as I hear it.  Josh Martel won the B's in his first cross race.  Eddie Joy was up there as well.

I'll post results on the site when I get them.

All photos by James Farrugia.  Here is a link to his full album.

Great fans with creative cheering instruments.

Toby has been having a fine season and it continues at Wednesday Cross.

Pumped to see some new folks out.

Ingrid continues to reign supreme in Missoula.

9/18 Missoula Cyclocross Update - Equestrian Park is the venue for tonight

Message from the promoter:

Hi Everyone,
Due to heavy rains last night we have decided to move the cyclocross race to the equestrian park. We do not want to risk doing any damage to the grounds at Fort Missoula.
Please arrive early for registration as we are expecting a large turnout. Also please park inside the equestrian park grounds, there is plenty of parking inside. Please avoid parking on North Ave. the neighbors get upset with all the cars lining the street.
Cooper Burchenal will be making hamburgers post race so come with an appetite if racing for an hour doesn't give you one.
If you are not familiar with the equestrian park - here are brief directions....
the entrance is located on North Ave. West which is just west of Big Sky High School and about a block west of Tower road. The equestrian park is bordered by North Ave West, Tower road and Spurgin road. You can get tot he park via South Ave or Spurgin road. If you come via South Ave turn right on Tower road just as you pass Big Sky High School, then take a left on North Ave.
If you have any questions please call 721-6525 and one of us can help you out.

Roubaix Course Conditions

Rode a lap on the Roubaix Course today.

Conditions are very similar to recent Roubaix Courses.  Smooth and dry with lots of potholes.  They are in the usual spots.  Ride with caution, especially on the descents.  No gravel, just a few stray rocks.  Be careful on corners and watch for potholes.  Road bikes should be great.  I'd recommend durable wheels and tires (23/25 would be fine), but ride what you're comfortable with.
Top of the climb on the lap.  The lead up to this climb has several smooth lines, with the center line containing potholes.

Speedwagon Course Update

From Race Promoter Matt Seeley:

Everything is setting up very well for the 6th annual Speedwagon Classic tomorrow. We have assembled an all-star team of volunteers for race support and food preparation for the big feast is well underway. The weather forecast says that we should see some sunshine streaming into the valley of trials and tribulations, with temps rising into the low 60's. A few light showers yesterday and today will only serve to firm up the soft spots.

I rode the first half of the course Tuesday on a road bike with 700x27 tires and all the dirt segments were dry, firm, and manageable. This year, the surfaces seem to be mostly smooth, but sporadically covered with a thin layer of small, loose gravel that should an appropriate level of discomfort in all the right places. The first segment on Light Road was fast and smooth in the center, but a little loose on the edges. Seifert Saddle is perfectly smooth, but the Apple Road climb has enough loose gravel to make it especially arduous. The southern most River Breaks segment is mostly fast, with a few short, tough gravel stretches. The descent down to Buffalo Bridge is fairly loose and probably the only place where knobby tires would significantly decrease the pucker factor.

As for the final 20 continuous dirt miles on the west side of the river. I haven't seen it in a couple weeks, but trust that it is still mostly smooth and firm with a few choice gravel sections (ranging from 50m to 1 mile at one point). Both of the big climbs (the Dentist (very top) and the REO (very bottom)) have one very short portion on which gravel got dumped, almost like we planned it that way to increase mental anguish. All in all, it should ride a lot like it has the past couple years, but with none of the clingy mud issues from 2012.

Reid Divide 50 in Whitefish

My favorite race last year was the Hell Roaring Stage Race.

It's gone for 2013, but in it's place is the Reid Divide 50.  A great option to use your Butte 50/100 form and compete against Flathead's Finest.

I've added the race site to link list.

Tour de Montana

The Cycling House is excited to present the first annual Tour de Montana.
A six day tour based out of Missoula, MT.  Test yourself on the mountain passes that Corbin, Halpin, and the Schultz bros grew up training on.  Slightly different then The Cycling Arizona, this trip will have tent camping and one night of rustic cabins.  Also, since this is a summer trip and were assuming ya'll have been putting the miles in, we've stepped up the daily average to 77.  Three days in a row of 80 miles plus an epic Queen Stage of 93 miles and two mountain passes.

The Cycling House Full Time Staff will all be on hand.
Halp, OG, Chef Drew, Anya, Gentleman at Large, and Shaun will round out the staff.  Photo by
