2009 Grizzly Triathlon

First, let's qualify my triathlon expertise. In 2002 I finished second in the team competition at the Beaver Lake sprint triathlon. I had the 25th fastest bike split. If you aren't catching my sarcasm....I'll spell it out for you. I know nothing about triathlon! I like watching and all my friends race. So, let's have some fun with the Grizzly Triathlon predictions:

S: It seems to be a two horse race with the top pro Linsey Corbin and the powerful youngster Jen Luebke. I was bummed to not see one of my all time fav triathletes; Emily Kipp not on the start list. I've been impressed with Rachel and Lacy at TWTT. Also, I know Alison Forney-Gorman (sp) will be up there. I also think Meg G. is a sleeper in this race as H Schultz. Luebke will post the fastest bike split, but Corbin will run her down. Top 5: Corbin, Luebke, Alison, Megan G., and Lacy. My sleeper of the race is Anya. If you haven't heard of her you soon will...

Stacked field this year.....just like every year :). Seeley, Hoffman, Halpin, Matty Ice, and Terminator Jensen, just to name a few. Seeley is back in the event. Hoffman is faster then ever. Halpin has been in Tucson all winter riding (rumor has it swimming too), and Matty Ice we know can blaze a 5.2 time trial. Terminator's been working on teeth. So who's got the extra gear this year? While I'd love to pick Matty Ice, but I know he hasn't been running. Hoffman and Seeley will do battle early on. Jensen will fight through a broken rib to put up a smoking bike split. Top 5: Mr. Seeley, Hoffman, Halpino, Terminator, Matty Ice (sorry Matty, even as a broken man Terminator won't let you beat him). My sleeper for the race is UM Triathlon's Johnny on the Spot. Don't be surprised to see him in the top 7.

TWTT Round 4 - PR's dropping like flies ahead of Grizzly

Maybe it was the warm temps......maybe it was the Grizzly Triathlon...maybe it was people working hard and getting faster. Whatever the reason there were 12 PR's last night at TWTT.

World Champ: With the absence of Matty Ice and Mariano there was a long list of names who could contest for the victory. At the head of that list was Johnny on the Spot who seems to be climbing the UM triathlon ladder. However a new TWTT rider Brent Ruby shocked the veterans with a 12:16 to claim the top spot! Everyone in the top 6 set a new PR (John 12:27, Andrew 12:51, Jesse 12:54, Wes 12:56, and Stinky 13:05)

People's Champ: The ladies had their game faces on. Our biggest loser of the day was Rachel who shaved 1:14 off her previous best (14:48). Delivering the performance of the event was Lindsay Campbell. Just 16 seconds off of Jenny Nerrison's 13:33 record, Campbell pulled a 13:49! This sets up the drama for the TWTT finale next week. Can Campbell break the record?!?!

UM Performance of the Week: The performance of the week goes to Josh Goldburg. He shaved 50 seconds off of his previous best. Also, Josh has done a great job organizing the UM Triathlon team this year. Good luck this weekend!

The TWTT finale is next week. Sponsors for the finale include Saucony, Powerbar, Big Sky Bikes, and The daily winners will receive their usual prize and we will be handing out prizes for the top 5 in the series (best 4 our of 5 races). In addition everyone who enters the TWTT finale will get their name in the drawing for a pair of Saucony running shoes and a special prize from Big Sky Bikes. Post race we will have the usual taco feast at Elliot's with a few additions. There will be an entertainment showcase starting at 8:30. Complete with a TWTT highlight slideshow, and performance from everyone's favorite heart throbs Matty Ice and Downtown Joel Brown. The top 5 in the men's and women's are far from settled....and you never know who could show up to disrupt the standings....

Results:Tomorrow check in for my Grizzly Triathlon picks.....

We've already got some new rider confirmations for round 4. Dr. Ruby will be making an appearance as will Missoula's favorite crosser Doug Dale Shryock. Will Dale beat his bro Matty Ice?

Come out and beat your time or lay down your best and see where it stacks up.

Frozen Flatlands - Not so frozen...

Photos added below

Beautiful weather all weekend in the Spokane area. Great turnout from Montana road racers. Results are posted here.

GAS, MT Velo, FVV, MJCF, Delphine, NRO, Flathead, Loudermart p/b Seven Cycles and Sportsman's were all represented.

My Highlights:

- Hey ladies! Megan Slivka wins the omnium with two firsts in the TT and circuit race and a second in the road race. She benefited from excellent work from the NRO cat 4 ladies team. Ivy and Campbell preserved the victory with hard riding in the circuit race. Both of them placed high in the overall. Mrs. Hamera Besseti rides a solo chase for 30 minutes in the circuit race! This just capped off and excellent weekend for the NRO captain. Anna Dingman in the cat 4's had a heck of a sprint. She gave Slivka a run for her money. Great weekend by the Bozeman rider.

- Willy Zelmer animates a 4 man breakaway in the cat 3 road race for 30 miles. This is after he placed 9th in the TT during the morning session. Smoking!

- Mariano Besseti races strong all weekend. I thought I was racing with Paolo Bettini. He was here he was there.....Mariano was covering moves, making moves, doing everything. 4th in the tt, 3rd in the road race, and 3rd in the circuit race. He was the top MT finisher in the cat 3's. Like the ladies 4 race, Mariano benefited from great teammwork (Mr. Seth Hansen and myself).

- Holy Agner! Who is this guy? Yes, TWTT star Jesse Agner place 2nd in the cat 4 road race! Way to go Jesse. He made a two man move in the finale and stuck it. Great racing.

- All day long for Nacho. Nacho Tack joined a solid breakaway in the road race comprised of powerhouse riders (Galin E, Ben Rhodes, ect). The break was caught with 10 or so miles to go. From there Tick Tack launched on a solo move. He was caught before the line...but great effort from the NRO man. In the circuit race he put a camera on his helmet :).

- Agressive Montanans. John W and Sebastian White were super agressive all weekend. John's hard work paid off with a win in the Master's A. Seb had a big impact on the circuit race even with no teammates. John W, Seb, and Elliot comprised of the most promising breakaway in the circuit race.

- Master's time. Longmire was up to his usual racing prowess, placing high in all three events to take 3rd overall. He had some help this weekend with Scotty Lenaburg and re-surged Blair Fischer. Both were a huge help, and Blair had a great weekend with a 5th in the omnium.

- Dan from Ride Clean. New to the Montana scene Dan Vasichek out of Great Falls was extremely impressive in his regional debut. He was 3rd in the tt and 9th in the road race. He placed high in the overall but I don't know officially where he finished.

- Sun Burnt. I got really sun burt and my white legs blinded all spectators.
